Website performance and accessibility are the shared foundation under every marketing channel a nonprofit runs. Page speed, measured by Google’s Core Web Vitals, feeds the page experience signals Google Search rewards, it is part of landing page experience in Google Ads, and it decides how much of your Ad Grant, email and social traffic actually converts. Accessibility is not a direct Google ranking factor, but the practices behind it (clear headings, real alt text, labeled forms, content that reads without JavaScript) are what search engines and AI assistants need to understand and cite your organization. Fixing that foundation makes the work you already do in each channel go further.
Why your marketing results are capped by your website
Most nonprofit marketing plans treat the website as a destination. You run the Google Ad Grant, publish blog posts for SEO, send the newsletter and post on social, and all of that traffic lands on the same set of pages. If those pages load slowly, shift around while they load, or can’t be used with a keyboard or screen reader, every channel pays the same cost. An Ad Grant click that bounces after three seconds is a lost conversion and a drag on the account’s click-through and conversion numbers. An email subscriber who can’t finish the donation form on a phone is gone. An AI assistant that can’t parse your program page cites another organization instead.
That is why we treat performance and accessibility as a multiplier on channel work rather than a separate technical project. They don’t replace SEO, ads or email; they determine how much of that effort turns into donations, sign-ups and program participation. What website performance and accessibility actually mean
Website performance is how fast and stable a page feels to a real visitor. Google measures it with three Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), where the main content should appear within 2.5 seconds; Interaction to Next Paint (INP), where the page should respond to taps and clicks within 200 milliseconds; and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), where content should not jump around, with a score below 0.1. Google’s own guidance is that site owners should “achieve good Core Web Vitals for success with Search.”
Website accessibility is whether people with disabilities, and anyone using assistive technology, an older device or a phone in bright sunlight, can perceive, operate and understand your site. The reference standard is WCAG 2.2 AA, and WCAG 2.1 AA is the level written into the federal ADA Title II rule for state and local governments. Failures are the norm. WebAIM’s 2026 analysis of the top one million home pages found detected WCAG 2 failures on 95.9% of them, an average of 56.1 errors per page. The most common were low-contrast text (83.9% of pages), missing image alt text (53.1%), missing form input labels (51%) and empty links (46.3%), and each of those also makes a page harder for search engines and AI tools to read. How performance and accessibility affect SEO
Does page speed affect SEO?
Yes, in two ways. First, Core Web Vitals are part of Google’s page experience signals, which “align with what our core ranking systems seek to reward.” Speed rarely beats relevance on its own, but between pages that answer the same query similarly well, a faster and more stable page can have the edge. Second, and more important for most nonprofits, speed changes what visitors do. Google’s mobile benchmarks found that 53% of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes longer than three seconds to load. Does accessibility affect SEO?
Not directly. Google’s John Mueller said in a March 2022 office-hours session that accessibility is “not something that we would pick up and use as a direct ranking factor when it comes to search.” That is the honest answer, and it is also where most articles stop. What matters for a nonprofit is the overlap, because the same fixes serve both goals.

Accessibility doesn’t buy rankings, but an inaccessible site usually has the same technical and content gaps that cost rankings.
How they affect GEO and AI search (ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews)
Generative engine optimization (GEO), the work of being found and cited inside AI assistants, raises the stakes on both fronts. Independent crawler analyses (Vercel’s “Rise of the AI Crawler” study and follow-ups) show that GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot fetch HTML but do not execute JavaScript. Google’s Gemini is the exception because it shares Googlebot’s rendering. So a program page whose content only appears after a script runs (a tab widget, an accordion that injects text, a donation form loaded by a third-party embed) can rank in Google and still be invisible to the assistants many people now ask first.
Accessibility work closes much of that gap. Content that works without JavaScript for a screen reader is content an AI crawler can read. Headings that describe their section become the passages a language model retrieves. Alt text and captions turn images and video into text the model can quote. A declared page language, one clear topic per page and a plain-language answer near the top are good practice for WCAG and for GEO at the same time.
Performance matters here too. Crawlers work within time and request limits, so a slow server, a heavy page or a firewall that blocks unfamiliar bots means fewer pages fetched and fewer chances to be cited. How they affect the Google Ad Grant
The Google Ad Grant is where performance and accessibility turn into policy. Google’s website policy for Ad Grants requires that your site loads quickly on all devices (Google points to PageSpeed Insights), works on phones and tablets, serves every page over HTTPS, has working links and functional donation buttons, and carries substantial original content about your mission. A slow or broken site can block approval or trigger a policy review.
Once you’re approved, the grant’s rules make speed a performance issue as well. Accounts must keep a 5% click-through rate each month at the account level, and missing it two months in a row leads to temporary deactivation. Bids are capped at $2.00 unless a campaign uses Maximize conversions, Target CPA or Target ROAS. Landing page experience is one of the three components of Google Ads Quality Score, and Google’s own tip on the subject is plain: “The speed at which your page loads can be the difference between someone bouncing or buying.” Slow, hard-to-use landing pages mean lower Quality Scores, weaker ad positions, fewer clicks, and fewer of the conversions Smart Bidding needs to spend up to the full $10,000 a month. How they affect paid search and paid social
The effect grows when you pay for every click. Deloitte and Google’s “Milliseconds Make Millions” study tracked 30 million sessions across 37 brand sites and found that a 0.1-second improvement in mobile speed lifted conversion rates by 8.4% in retail and 10.1% in travel, and increased lead-generation form completions by 21.6%. For a nonprofit running Meta or paid Google campaigns, the lesson carries over: the same budget produces more donations and sign-ups when the landing page is fast, and because ad platforms optimize toward the pages that convert, a slow page tends to raise your cost per result over time. How they affect email, social and everything else you own
Email and organic social are channels where you’ve already earned the audience, so losing people to a slow or inaccessible page is pure waste. Much of that traffic arrives on phones, and a campaign landing page that takes six seconds to show its main content, or a form that can’t be completed with a screen reader, loses the supporters who were most ready to act. Accessible content also travels better: alt text on shared images, captions on video and descriptive link text make your posts usable by more of the people who see them.
There is a legal side as well. If your organization receives federal funding or serves the public through government partners, WCAG conformance is moving from best practice to obligation. The ADA Title II rule adopts WCAG 2.1 AA for state and local governments, and after a one-year extension published in April 2026, the deadlines are April 26, 2027 for public entities with a total population of 50,000 or more and April 26, 2028 for smaller entities and special district governments. The multiplier in numbers
To make the case to a board or an executive director, put it on one page. Suppose your site gets 10,000 visits a month across all channels and converts at 1.5%. That’s 150 donations, sign-ups or registrations. The Deloitte figures suggest that shaving a few tenths of a second off mobile load time can move conversion rates by 8–10%, which at the same traffic is 12–15 additional donations or sign-ups every month, before any new spend on ads or content.
Then add the visits you stop losing past the three-second mark, the Ad Grant budget that becomes spendable as Quality Scores rise, and the AI citations that become possible once your content reads without JavaScript. Counted that way, performance and accessibility work belongs near the top of the marketing budget, because every other channel draws on it.

It matters, but alongside relevance rather than instead of it. Is accessibility a Google ranking factor?

Do accessibility overlays or widgets fix these issues?
No. Overlays add a toolbar on top of the page but don’t fix contrast, structure, labels or keyboard access in the underlying code, and they can interfere with the assistive technology people already use. Fixing the issues in the site itself and monitoring for regressions is what holds up.
How fast should a nonprofit website load?
Aim for an LCP under 2.5 seconds on mobile for your donation page and top landing pages. Google’s research shows abandonment rising sharply past three seconds, so treat three seconds as the ceiling, not the goal.
Is my nonprofit legally required to have an accessible website?
