The story

The Challenge

The Arc was in a period of real growth: a fifth residential home, major new funding, and a brand-new facility for its administrative offices and Adult Training Facility on the way. But its website couldn’t tell that story. Built on a rigid template platform, it gave the team little flexibility to expand, and nobody on the leadership team or Board felt it represented the organization. Most importantly, The Arc’s primary audience is people with disabilities — so an inaccessible or hard-to-use website wasn’t just a marketing problem, it was a mission problem.

Our Approach

We rebuilt the site on WordPress with accessibility as the organizing principle, applying everything our accessibility practice has learned to a site where inclusive design is the whole point. The new design professionalizes The Arc’s presence ahead of the Adult Training Facility announcement and replaces the locked-down template with a flexible system the team can grow page by page. We also revamped the blog and events calendar, and built a custom donation form integrated with PayPal, everyday tools the old locked-down template never allowed.

Why It Worked

Serving people with disabilities means the website has to serve them too. Putting accessibility first, and giving a growing organization a platform that doesn’t fight its growth, aligned The Arc’s digital presence with the standard it holds everywhere else.
