The Google Ad Grant gives qualifying 501(c)(3) nonprofits $10,000 each month in free Google Search ad credit. It runs on the same auction as paid ads, with no cost to the organization.

The program is real and the budget is real. The work for most nonprofits is keeping the account compliant and productive over time.

The grant comes with specific rules: a minimum 5% click-through rate, restrictions on broad or single-word keywords, mandatory conversion tracking, and an annual program survey. Accounts that fall out of compliance can be paused — most teams only learn there's a problem when their traffic drops.

§ 02 — The reality

Three reasons grants underperform.

In our audits of nonprofit Ad Grant accounts, most are either inactive or operating below Google's compliance thresholds. Three issues account for nearly all of it.

i.

The 5% CTR rule

Google requires a 5% click-through rate, sustained over time. Accounts that fall below it for two consecutive months can be suspended. Many teams are unaware of the threshold until the notification arrives.

ii.

Limited conversion tracking

Without conversion tracking properly configured, Google's machine learning has nothing to optimize toward, and the daily budget often gets spent on clicks that don't become donors, volunteers, or signups.

iii.

Set-and-forget management

Grant rules evolve, Google's algorithm shifts, and your programs change. A grant that worked a few years ago needs ongoing tuning to keep performing — and most accounts haven't been revisited since launch.
